2010 Frozen Fingers Fun Fly

The 2010 edition of the Frozen Fingers Fun Fly will go down in club history as one to be remembered. The field was in great shape with a nice smooth top from last week’s rain and there was just enough fresh snow to make steering effective. We registered 15 pilots and had at least three times that many guests, visitors, and hecklers. The weather was better than anyone could as for with bright sunny skies, high temps in the upper twenties and reasonable winds for most of the day. My thanks go to everyone who came out to compete, assist in setup and running the event, or just came out to watch the fun. It was a terrific day at the flying field.

We started with Helium Combat where a balloon is attached to a streamer and suspended by a pole. Each pilot has three minutes to try to pop the balloon, but you can also score points by rubbing or cutting the streamer. Matt Bole got the crow cheering with a balloon pop just 16 seconds into his flight. Wow!

The second event was Precision Egg Land. The goal is to fly exactly one minute while carrying an egg in a paper cup attached to your plane. Only Bob Terry and Bob Barger managed to land with the egg, and Bob Terry came out on top by virtue of a better spot landing.

Event number three was Speed and Stop in Box. Start and stop boxes were painted on the field, and all you had to do was take off, loop, and land. The time started when you left the start box, and stopped when the plane was in the stop box (even if it had to be carried there). It might be that this is the favorite event of the local hobby shops because it’s amazing how aggressive some pilots will get trying to get back on the ground quickly. Bob Terry showed us all how it should be done with a blazing 18 second finish, with Dave Majchrzak not far behind at 20 seconds.

How many loops can you do in one minute? That is the task in the 60 Second Super Looper event. If you are Brian Redmond or Bob Terry you can average more than one loop every two seconds. Brian was on top with 32 and Bob managed 31.

Who went home ‘in the money’? Bob Terry came out on top, and we had a three way tie for second place between Bob Barger, Matt Boyle, and Brian Redmond.

Doug Murray was the happy winner of the raffle plane. He was at work when his ticket was drawn, but managed to stop at the field on his way home. It took a little effort to get the .60 sized plane in his small car, but we managed.
