Who are we?

The Southern NH Flying Eagles Radio Control Club is a group of people interested in promoting all aspects of the airborne radio control hobby. Club members fly sport planes, scale planes, gliders and helicopters. Many members regularly assist and instruct newcomers to ensure their successful entry into this exciting hobby.

All club members are also members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), a national umbrella organization. The AMA fosters competitions, publishes a monthly magazine, represents our hobby at a national level, and provides liability insurance for members. The terms of our club insurance require membership in the AMA for anyone wishing to fly at one of our field.

What can we do for you?

Beginners usually have many questions and few places to find answers. We, ourselves, were once beginners , and now we would like to help you. We will answer your questions, and we will teach you to fly. By learning from an instructor, you will have fewer crashes, less frustration, and more time to fly. There is no charge for this guidance or instruction.

The experienced pilot can learn more about the hobby from other experienced people. Some of our club members are using the latest high tech building methods; come learn how you can too!

Where are we?

Our club meets in Merrimack, NH at 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. We meet at Saint James United Methodist Church on the Daniel Webster Highway about a quarter mile northeast of the Bedford Road exit off the Everett Turnpike. Meetings are open to the public; you are welcome to join us! The agenda is flexible and often includes demonstrations and discussions on various aspects of modeling.

Our club flies at a field in Merrimack New Hampshire. Members usually fly on weekends year round and in the evenings on weekdays as daylight allows. Please come watch and ask questions!

The Merrimack field is less than one mile from Exit 11 off the Everett Turnpike. After leaving the highway, head east and go straight through all the lights and down the little hill. Turn left at the foot of the hill and park by the small building on the right. Walk across the railroad tracks and down the embankment.

If you would like to be sure that someone will be flying when you do visit a field, please call one of the club officers listed here.

What else do we do?

Our Winter Fun Fly!

Eagles Cup schedule and standings

Out club emphasizes fun (as well as safety), so each year we hold a number of informal contests called "fun flys" with events designed for all levels of pilot skill. We also sponsor AMA sanctioned, formal contests.

We promote the hobby within the community, working with the schools and with youth organizations. We encourage a junior membership in the club with a reduced price. <p>

Our monthly newsletter keeps members informed about club activities and regional events. The newsletter includes "How-to" articles and vignettes on a variety of topics.

The club owns a library of video tapes to be loaned to members at no charge. This library includes several tapes for beginners and a few on advanced techniques. We are continually expanding this library to meet the needs of the members.

Our annual club auction in October is our primary fund raising activity for the year. Modelers come to buy and sell a variety of hobby related items and the cub keeps a small percentage of the selling price.

One of the functions of an R/C flying club is the management of radio frequencies in simultaneous use. Our frequency control system allows members to safely use radios on all 50+ frequencies; it also has accommodations for the "wide band" radios.

Many of our club members also participate in contests. One very popular contest is the annual Mid-Hudson RC World War I Jamboree held each year at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Rhinebeck, New York. Here are some of the members that fly in this contest.

Where do you start?

We recommend that you come and talk with us before you buy your first plane, engine or radio. Either stop by one of our flying fields or come to one of our club meetings. We will tell you what gear we have seen to be the most successful.

If you insist on buying the equipment before talking with us, please take some time to talk with the staff of a real hobby shop, not a toy store. Tell them that you are a beginner and that you would like a trainer. Don't buy a plane on looks alone - the fanciest looking planes and warbirds are often the most difficult to fly.

Because you need your AMA membership to fly at the fields of most clubs including ours, you should send your AMA application several weeks before you are ready to fly. AMA applications are available at most hobby stores and from the club officers.

An application for membership in the Flying Eagles follows. The usual membership is $50 the first year and $35 thereafter. (There are also less expensive memberships for elders, juniors and families). Membership entitles you to free instruction, the newsletter, the club's video library, and the use of our field.
