Flying Radio Controlled Combat has become a passion for several of the Flying Eagles, so here are some tips on getting started. Hopefully the club will continue to hold two combat competitions a year, one in July and one in October. The stock class is limited to standard Gremlins powered by bushing engines (no ball bearings) up to .25. The RA Cores web site maintains a contest calendar. Gremlin Kits are available from RA Cores. These supplemental Gremlin building instructions may be of help to first time Gremlin builders. In the open class, anything goes up to .40 size engines. I've seen some success with the Predator from TufFlight, a variety of SPADS and other combat (even non-combat) designs. Our contests are based on Gremlin Combat rules. Usually it's three rounds of one-on-one competition against random opponents in your class. Points are awarded for streamer cuts, and closest to the spot on landing. If necessary, fly-off rounds are held to determine the top three places in each class. It's competition, but the idea is to have fun. Here are the Gremlin Scoring Sheets I use when I CD. If you are more interested in multi-plane competition, check out the RC Combat Association special interest group of the AMA. Popular with the scale type folks are 1/12 warbirds from JK Aerotech and similar scale designs. |
